Research Center/Room

Hi guys,
A few people came up while I was on the desk and Carly said she just had one show up asking for the Research Center/room (this lives in the Writing Center). This is a bit of a surprise to me, but I guess the professors are directing their students there. I actually didn't know this room existed until Alison just told me. I just answered their research question while I was here, but this center is available for in-depth research assistance. Their info is at: http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/pwr/FAQ/center.htm. It is part of the writing center.

British Parliamentary Papers

Hi everyone the season of British Parliamentary Papers usage appears to be coming back. So I thought I would just post a quick little reminder on how to use this resource.

1) Have a Cd., C, Cmd, number? Search Chinook using the C, Cmd, Cd as a title and you will get a record listing our paper holdings. We have a whole row of these in paper and they are available for checkout! And despite what you may have heard they are NOT all cataloged.

2) If that doesn't work walk on over to the CD-ROM computers and under international/foreign publications you will see the CDs we have covering up to 1945. Want after 1945, well life gets a little more interesting. We have a ton of paper indexes over next to the Colorado reference shelves. If you are lucky you might also find the resource in BOPCRIS.

3) What you need before going downstairs:
* The year
* The volume number (keep it in roman numerals, thats what we have downstairs)
* The page number

4) Just bring up the whole box of microprint from the basement. We are barcoding and swiping the box for in-house use. If you luck out and want from the 1970s to the present they are in microfiche one row down from the NARA film.

5) Lost confused, just can't figure it out? Just give me a call and I'll come and help the patron out. If they don't have a citation, in some cases the print indexes are actually better then the paper ones for finding what they want. We also may have some great resources in print that are uncataloged. For example, yesterday someone was looking for some colonial command papers and I was also able to direct her to some of our colonial reports from the years she wanted in paper. I love having an excuse to tell people about those foreign documents so please don't hesitate to send them my way!

MInutes for October 2, 2007

Anudas introduced us to the new systems person, Tim Geldorff.

Yolanda has been terminated from the University Libraries as of 10/01/2007. She has not responded to email messages from the Libraries. Four or five months ago she indicated to Jim Williams that she was coming back to work, but no one has heard from her since. Her leave ran out on the 1st.

The request for a new reference phone has been sent to Rani.

Linda reported that there is now a new microform checkout form at the circ desk. All the fiche has been filed, except for those in the in-house use box. Tommy is the filer.

Regarding sending GPO Denise's NASA originals. Tim will email GPO and find out. Pat/Denise will create a list of the records Denise has done. After some discussion, the thought was that we need to send GPO records for all non-GPO items.

LInda is working with Tim on loading records. They have loaded CO and shipping list records so far. ASI and World Bank records will be loaded before Tim leaves. After he leaves, Linda will be doing the loads.

Tim noted that a recent govdoc-l message indicated that WebTechNotes is currently unavailable. however, there is an EXCEL version available.

The department will be taking Tim out to lunch on Tuesdya, October 9th.

There was a general discussion about the EBD record load. If there is a GPO record for the print, we can transfer the EBD microfiche records to the print record. Serial records will pose special problems. Martha Jo has been running into some problems working with these records, so we will revisit EBD record issues again.

Darci has re-done the country pages using a new template. Each is two to three times as big as the previous version. She is grabbing lots more resources, including non-governmental ones. Regional information and resources are also on the pages. There are different templates for developing and non-developing countries.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectively submitted,
Leanne Walther, recorder
