Minutes for 3/4/09
I. Minute-Taker
Salem Martin agreed to take minutes.
II. Research Desk Scheduling with Erika Klein
Erika Klein visited the Gov Pubs staff meeting to discuss research desk scheduling. Some of the highlights:
Deb mentioned that she had noticed a patron connect his laptop to a public computer with a USB cable and wondered if this was a problem (i.e. could they download things to their laptops that they shouldn't?).
We now have a recycle bin in Gov Pubs office for hardbound books. However, if you want to discard a book that seems like it might have some value, put it on Sheila's book truck.

II. Research Desk Scheduling with Erika Klein
Erika Klein visited the Gov Pubs staff meeting to discuss research desk scheduling. Some of the highlights:
- Erika creates a new schedule weekly. There has been some discussion in Research Desk force about changing to scheduling monthly--but if this happened it wouldn't happen until next semester.
- Beginning of semester: Erika asks when people aren't available. Then she creates an "availability grid" for each day/time and crosses off names when people notify her that they won't be available.
- Weekend schedule: created for the entire semester.
- Erika is just the scheduler, not the Research Desk supervisor. Jennifer K. tells Erika what each person's RD quota is, and Erika bases the schedule on this info.
- Preferences? Erika encouraged us to let her know if there are certain dates/times when we want to work on the Res. Desk.
- Evening: If you want to work some evenings, talk to the person typically scheduled for a particularly night and find out they'd be willing to give up an evening shift now and then.
- Sharepoint site for Res. Desk: You can find Erika's scheduling grid here.
- Summer schedule: Plan is for Ref. Desk to be open till 6 pm; this may change.
Deb mentioned that she had noticed a patron connect his laptop to a public computer with a USB cable and wondered if this was a problem (i.e. could they download things to their laptops that they shouldn't?).
- Deb will contact Systems and ask if this situation is a problem.
- If you question what a patron is doing with a public computer, the best person question the patron is a rep. from Security.
- John Culshaw says work is being done to find a solution to air-pressure problems (which make it drafty above the Res. Desk)
- Art & Arch. Library: note that if you print something from one of the A&A computers, the print job is sent to the Science Library.
- Some patrons representing Boulder labs are asking whether they can get Identikeys to access databases via UCB libraries. This situation still needs to be worked out.
We now have a recycle bin in Gov Pubs office for hardbound books. However, if you want to discard a book that seems like it might have some value, put it on Sheila's book truck.
